This study was accomplished with the objective of evaluating levels and application
forms of nitrogen on the yield and the quality of cowpea bean seeds, IPA 206 cultivar. In order to
do that, two experiments were made in the Center of Agrarian Sciences at Federal University of
Paraíba, Brazil, from April to August of 2001, by being one in field and another in laboratory. The
field experiment was conducted to evaluate the production of seeds, whose treatments consisted
of five levels of nitrogen (zero, 25, 50, 75 and 100kg/ha) and two forms nitrogen application (soil
and foliar). It were used experimental design of randomized blocks, with the treatments distributed
in factorial scheme 5x2, in four repetitions. In the experiment in laboratory, elaborated for the
evaluation of the seeds quality the treatments were also distributed in factorial scheme 5x2, but the
experimental design was completely randomized with four repetitions. The yield of seeds when
the nitrogen was applied in the soil reached estimate maximum value (3,55t/ha), in the level of
56,0kg/ha of nitrogen. When the nitrogen was applied through foliating, the level of 59,5kg/ha
was responsible by the maximum yield of seeds (3,44t/ha). The economical analysis indicated the
level of 55kg/ha of nitrogen soil application as the most viable economically one for the production
of cowpea bean seeds. The germination of the seeds in laboratory elevation in function of the
increased of nitrogen levels when they were applied in the soil and it presented average of 88%
when they were applied through foliating. The nitrogen applied in the soil provided the production
of more vigorous seeds, by happening linear germination increase of the seeds in the first counting,
with elevation of nitrogen levels, while, when the nitrogen was applied through foliating, the
medium germination in the first counting was of 80%.
