The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of different vigour tests
in the identification of vigour levels and health quality of melon seeds (Cucumis melo L.). Four
seed lots of the Gaúcho and Carvalho cultivars produced in Hulha Negra-RS were evaluated.
Seeds were submitted to the germination tests, first germination counting, field emergency, controlled
deterioration, accelerated aging test, seedlings vigour classification, cold vigour test and health
test. Results indicated that the controlled deterioration and accelerated aging tests presented
enough sensitivity for evaluating physiological potential melon seeds but evaluation of seedlings
tests did not show enough sensitivity to accomplish a classification of lots. Aspergillus ssp. and
Fusarium oxysporum were detected in seeds and showed height correlation with dead seeds in
vigour tests.
